Sotiria Georgiou

Sotiria has a Physics degree and a MSc. degree in Environmental Physics from the University of Athens, Greece (UoA). She has been conducting her research under the guidance of the Ocean Physics and Modelling group at the UoA. Sotiria’s research interests center around ocean circulation, deep-water formation processes, air-sea interaction and climate changes- issues that she has been investigating since her BSc and MSc Theses.

She has been appointed as a PhD Candidate at TU Delft, since 1st April 2015, where she works in the group of Caroline Katsman on her VIDI research project: "From small whirls to the global ocean: How ocean eddies govern the response of the ocean circulation to high-latitude climate change". This project involves fundamental research on deep convection and sinking of dense waters in the North Atlantic Ocean, focusing on the role of ocean eddies for these processes.

Sotiria’s involvement in this project is to investigate the impacts of the local eddy activity on deep convection and sinking of dense waters in the Labrador and Irminger Seas. Furthermore, she aims to determine the sensitivity of the convective cycle and sinking to changes in local environmental conditions. She will perform multi-year simulations by using a highly idealized configuration of the MIT General Circulation Model –MITgcm (http://mitgcm.org/).
